Ooh - are those buildings in #5 Heights Cottages? I used to live in number 4. I don't remember the attached porches though. It looks like they've been gentrified since I lived there!

The sun was shining, and winter always looks better that way to me! I've been passing by these Sumac bushes almost daily, and normally they look to be a dull red colour. In the sun, however, they perk right up. Also, some more silliness with icicles. The last one is looking up from the bottom of one. No I didn't get right under it to do this, only the camera did If you look closely, you'll see water droplets.

I think you have cornered the icicle market, nothing over here comes anywhere close, and I can tell something got wet.

Today in Pictures is a walk of mystery to me, but I had a guide.


1. Starting on Old Coal Staithe, there must be a story attached to that name, but it is the lane down to Read Garden Centre, we headed in the direction of Read Hall.
2. Entering what would have been the estate attached to the hall we headed for the hall.
3.I think the area is now called Read Hall Park.
4. The trees now provide shade and shelter for the sheep.
5. The sun is low in the sky, and watery, even my sun has a moisture content.
6. At this point we have taken a left turn and are heading in the direction of the Old Roman Road.
7. Great Harwood is centre left, and the trees in the distance are Dean Clough.
8. We reach the Roman Road, have a bit of a paddle in a tributary to the calder, it enters the Calder on Old Coal Staithe.
9. We are heading back now down through Read Hall Park.
10. And back down the lane to the car. Next time we come this way we will head in the direction of the viaduct as I have never seen the other side.

Today in Pictures, with low lying cloud sitting over the region for 24 hours I thought I would head to the cemetery to get some moody, misty shots of the church and headstones, got there using headlights and fog lights, arrived, not a mist or moody shot to be had, the only place in the region cloud free, Ood a thowt it.

1. Most of todays' pictures will be facing in the same direction.
2. That's as misty as it gets.
3. Looking out from the church.
4. There is a slight mist around the pylons, almost making them vanish.
5. Wet knees a go-go.
6. Heading back down the perimeter wall.
7.There are a million stories in this cemetery, that headstone belongs to a family from Peel Park Gardens.
8. Todays' headstones are not a patch on Victorian ones.
9. Although the lack of maintenance makes them susceptible to gravity.
10. I am sure they are supposed to be "G's" but they do look like "C's"

You may not have found the misty atmosphere you were hoping for, but you certainly got some lovely photos. Number 9 is my favourite

It just shows if you sett off with something in mind it may not pan out as expected.

Back from a lovely long weekend away up North of the border, todays pics are from Friday, the drive up and around where we were stopping.

1. Loch Lomand
2-5. Glen Coe.
6&7. Loch Leven.
8. The lodge we were staying in, overlookin Loch Oich.
9. The well of the seven heads.
10. Sun going down over Loch Oich.

Today in Pictures, setting off up plantation Road I didn't realise how I would be drawn into the history of the area, or realise how complex the area was.

1. All that remains of the once proud Arden Hall, built in 1846 for Benjamin Hargreaves.
2. Up thill, Plantation Road, the longest un restored cobbled (stone setts) road in England.
3. The rear entrance pillars to Plantation House occupied by William Denham Grimshaw.
4. To the rear of Plantation House, all that remains of the service buildings and the greenhouse complex.
5. The stream that once powered the 36' waterwheel(one of two) that provided power into the mill complex. Higher up it was sluiced to provide constant water.
6. This is the water that flowed from the 4 reservoirs, it provided the water to undertake the calico printing.
7. The waterfall still provides a useful amount of water.
8. This building is within sight of the waterwheels and there is a small lodge behind, so I am guessing it had something to do with the water supply.
9. Here is where the water enters the mill area to be put to use.
10. Here is the top of the gate post that once stood on the road through the mill complex. There is one either side of the path and gives some idea how much the land has been filled in.

This film is local history walk around the area by Lee Aaron and Mike Dickinson, I should have watched this before I went on my travels, it would have made more sense of the area.
