Compost Bin Issues

Just starting work on my garden: do any of you have a compost bin ? And is it worth having one… I also hear they encourage RATS in the garden ( something I don’t want) I will recycle but not if I am going to get rats…
so just wondering if I should get one or not....

Re: Compost Bin Issues

we have several magpie 1 in garden rest down the allotment... if yours look like ours do (darleks) you shouldnt have any probs with rats , and if you,ve got a garden they are great for composting ..we,ve just thrown loads of worms into ours because apparently they are great for helping break things down ... good luck

Iy you get a secure one, with a lid, you won't get rats, just great free compost.

Re: Compost Bin Issues

I have two-a dalek one and a heap at the bottom of the garden-i have never had a rat problem *touch wood*.
They dont even smell or anything-my only problem is........
They are both at there limits now-so having to throw things in normal bin till it starts proper decomposing.
I transported loads of worms from my old garden to my compost bins and the garden because when i moved my current garden was covered in sand and paving slabs-so no worms up here. They seem to have settled in well though

We had one when we had the allotment but there's just nowhere to put one now which is a shame.

Re: Compost Bin Issues

If you have 2 you cold even get teh white bag outside as it has a decent tight fitting lid so they wouldn't get wet. There you go, all your rubbish back outside where it belongs!

Re: Compost Bin Issues

Place a sheet of chicken wire beneath the bin if rats or other rodents could be a problem, they cant burrow under then.

I have one that I never use. It's one of those given away by the council, but I moved and never used it.

If anyone wants it drop me a PM.

Re: Compost Bin Issues

I wouldn't mind having a stab at home composting, I'm just trying to suss out the best place for the bin. I wouldn't worry too much about rats, the chances are that they come into your garden anyway. I have heard it said that you're never more than 6 feet away from a rat..
