Does Brylcreem go off, expiry date

Was browsing the news sites and came across a story about Brylcreem getting a new model for the product ,only the 4th in the history of the product, I thought "I've some of that stuff in the bathroom cabinet" checking the cabinet found one tub with the number 9300 on the bottom, and one tube of the stuff marked 96429 , both look and smell like what Brylcreem should .
Don't even remember why I bought the stuff , the last memory I have of Brylcreem is it being used as a massage 'oil' in a bar in Thailand in the early 80s
Anyone know how long Brylcreem lasts or have any usefull tips for any other uses , hate to throw stuff away if its worth anything .

Most "cosmetic" style stuff like that has a use by date depending on when you opened it, suncreams usually have a little symbol of an open pot and 6 or 12 next to it meaning months after it was opened. With Brylcreem I wouldn't think it would matter to be honest, it's not gonna do you any harm, except maybe catch a few flies!

Shouldn't he be putting it on his hair rather than his head?

Well, I guess he has other hairy places, so maybe we should clarify it still further......it will be Ok as long as you are only putting it on the hair on your head!
(and as long as the Brylcreem isn't growing hair in the pot)

absolutly no signs of growth of any type (fungus/mold etc) in the pot/jar , that was why I asked the original question about shelf life , although reading the ingrediants , using a magnifying glass I'm thinking the stuff is more like toxic waste from Chernoble

Well, it was slapped liberally on lots of heads over the years, and none of the chaps seem to have come to much harm......ah, yes....but of course, this was long before Chernobyl.

Re: Does Brylcreem go off, expiry date

Ugh it was horrible stuff, Brylcreme. It was like today's gel but greasy.

My dad used it until the early 70s. He, like me (I inherited it from him), had gone grey at a very early age and he used to flatten his hair down with the stuff. In the 70s, when he was in his 60s, longer hair became fashionable and he stopped using it - to find his hair was white and thick and curled in the nape of his neck.

Chuck it away, Steeljack. Who wants to run their fingers through a head full of lard?

Time for you to choose another fragrance eh, rather than waste your money on something that makes you gag

By the way, anyone remember "Kolene" (or something like that) ... even grosser than Brylcreem ... I think that the barber on Lower Barnes Street (can't remember his name) used to have it in stock

Re: Does Brylcreem go off, expiry date

Don't remember "kolene' , but remember 'Brilliantine' , think it came in an oval shaped tin , had a greenish colour to it, the stuff was thicker than axle grease. Was popular in days when men had quiffs

I'll now let Katex and MargaretR reminisce about their memories of quiffs

note to Moderators who may belong to a 'younger' generation, a quiff is not a dirty word and has no sexual or purient conotations, so no need to edit .

When I was in my teens the "quiff" was all the better for being styled in a "Tony Curtis", with a DA at the back. I went out with a lad who had this style and he used Brylcreme and - soap - to achieve it. He would never go out in the rain.

Given the climate over there, he must have spent a lot of time inside.
