Fray Bentos Pies
Do you remember them? How long is it since you had one? For me it had been a few years, but after a discussion with Mick about them the other week when I was in my local supermarket I thought why not.
So I bought a Steak and Ale Pie and also one of their traditonal Steak and Kidney ' Now with Oxo Gravy'.
The Steak and ale pie was nice, not very nice just, nice.
The Steak and Kidney ' Now with Oxo Gravy', wasn't nice in fact it was very disappointing, the brown water with lumps of meat in it in fact were a complete let down. I therefore did a quick google to try and find Frey Bentos'
web site, they don't seem to have one but I did find this:-
pie-man.com
They give a far better revue than I could ever possibly hope to do in a million years!

I keep a couple in the pantry for emergencies.
The nice thing is you don't have to wash up, just throw the tin away.

Re: Fray Bentos Pies
I do prefer the white plop plop filling [chicken,] to the brown plop plop fillings [beef] though.

Re: Fray Bentos Pies
I do know somebody who tried to cook a Fray Bentos pie with the lid still on.... I like the steak ones, but haven't had one for years, I do love the pastry though.

Re: Fray Bentos Pies
I remember when one pie served four but you'd never find enough meat in them to share between four these days.
The pastry is definitely the best part.

Re: Fray Bentos Pies
If I ever have to eat another Fray Bentos pie, it will be too soon! I am seriously emotionally scarred by them things!
My mum used to get the steak & kidney ones because my dad was mad on them. To say I hate kidney is an understatement! Bless her, mum did try rooting all the kidney out that was on my plate but everytime without fail a tiny piece always found it's way into my mouth and I'd be sat there wretching with this kidney in my mouth, my dad shouting " just bloody swallow it" OHHHH

Re: Fray Bentos Pies
I still buy Fray Bentos pies now. Ginger doesn't like them and neither do the kids so usually i get a full one to myself.
The pastry is the best bit.................YUMMY!!!!!
Tinks, mum should have just give me your portion of the pie, saves you being sick at the table
