I asked Jeeves and he came up with this http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068794

Seems pretty thorough.

What works for me when I get cramp is pulling the foot back towards the shin and massaging the calf muscle with the other hand. Once the pain has subsided I hobble away to the kitchen and prepare myself a hot water bottle.

Once the heat has penetrated to the damaged muscle I lie on my side and ride a bicycle with my legs for a few minutes. It helps to get the circulation moving better.

Hope that helps.

Re: leg cramps...

I often get cramp in my feet, my toes squeeze up, hurt like hell and look horrible until it subsides. At night I sometimes get cramp in my shins, particularly the left one. There isn't a lot I can do except get out of bed and walk around. It usually goes away after 5 minutes or so. It's excruciatingly painful and I sympathise with anyone who's a fellow sufferer. I've tried every remedy but nothing works.

Re: leg cramps...

I was about 8 months pregnant with Harry and got the worst cramp i've ever had in my life in my leg. It was the middle of the night and i jumped out of bed screaming and nearly gave my Mum & brother heart attacks because they thought i'd gone into labour. That took my mind off it cause I was laughing at them so much.

I used to get it a lot when I was a dancer. The only thing i've found to get rid of it is just to rub your legs get the lactic acid moving again.

Re: leg cramps...

I have suffered with very bad cramp many years ago, it got so bad that I was limping like a fool(no comments from Rindi and Neil please) for days afterwards. I was in hospital around 16 years ago and I had a real attack of cramp in the middle of the night and was prescribed Quinine sulphate, to be taken at bedtime, I am still on it today and have had little trouble since. Whether this is any good for you ema during your pregnancy I don't know, but it sure works for me

Re: leg cramps...

Occasionally get it in the foot whilst swimming .. yes, I know very common .. why do you get it when doing this ?

Quite funny really, sometimes sat in the steam room with my big toe departing outwards from the rest .. won't shift until all gone. Can't perform this contortion in normal circumstances.

Re: leg cramps...

I had leg cramp during pregnancy, that plus the aching of ya baby kicking.....no wonder i looked dead half the time!!...lol
It common in pregnancy
Try to......
Stretch your calf muscles regularly during the day and several times before you go to bed, Try a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles and stay hydrated during the day by drinking water regularly.
