Message in a bottle

On Wednesday morning my flaming smoke alarm went of about 2am and was eventually disconnected around three because it was obviously faulty after 7 times. I rang HH about a replacement and guess what they weren't very interested and said they pass my details onto the Fire Service. By yesterday morning I hadn't heard anything so I rang them myself, seeing I'm disabled living alone it was a priority and was told it would be taken care of that day. I had a call around 6-15pm and they said they were calling within the hour which they did, took 2 minutes to fit, and the fire prevention officer did a safety check of my home which passed with flying colours, none smoker no chip pan, no lecky blanket proper plugs and extensions etc. He then mentioned "Message in a bottle" heh, its a scheme funded by the Lions whereas you have this container and inside there's a leaflet on which you put all your relative details medications allergies and other info, you then put the leaflet in the container, then put the top on, there are two stickers one which is placed on the window on the outside of your front door and the other on your fridge door then put the container in the fridge. its so that if Paramedics are called to your home they see the sticker and can then get your relative details so they can administer treatments without compromising anything, a great idea and well worth it, I'm sure these things will be available from GPs or Chemist, for anyone interested

Re: Message in a bottle

John that bottle scheme has been around for a long time - got a lot of publicity when it first appeared but don't hear much about it now. It's a very good idea.

My elderly cousin who lives alone has always had great service from the fire brigade when she's had problems with her smoke alarms.

The scheme has been around a few years now jaysay, it is well worth others ringing the local fire station for details.

When we moved into our new home in December 2010 there were 5 other bungalows in the cul de sac and as soon as they were all sold the fire brigade came and did a safety check.

They gave us the bottle and stickers and also some leaflets and a DVD about safety at home. they asked us to mention the scheme to any body we knew.

They also told us they will fit, for free, a smoke alarm with a ten year battery life if they visit a premise without one.
I am glad your alarm was a false one though jaysay, I suspect you would have problems getting out quickly so a smoke alarm would give you the extra seconds you need.

Spot on Gremlin when it first went of I was well asleep knocking the zz out, and it was a bit disconcerting, to say the least. I'd never heard of this Message in a bottle before but its certainly a great idea and I'm just about to sort it out so its up and running, but if other people are interested I'm sure the fire brigade would point people in the right direction

You can get the bottles from the Lions. My mother has had one for quite a while now.The are a great idea. We have had two free smoke alarms fitted with the fire brigade in our house.
