I don't think that there is a single 90 degree angle in the whole house. The ceilings are plastered with a "bullnose" curve and I want paper to finish about eighteen inches below ceiling. How do I get a nice straight line along the top?

Get a 1 inch nail and gently tap it into the plaster in the corner of the room, do the same in the other corner both at the height you want, now tie black cotton thread to one nail and tie it tight to the other nail.
step back and see what it looks like. you can either paper to the black cotton or use it to mark a straight line using a long straight edge and a pencil. I used a laser sight off a rifle to draw a similar line, but the cotton pulled tight should be ok.
