Aye Barrie, Sekt (Fizzy wine) is most definitely "Beliebt" by the Germans. It's the poor mans Champers, although I'd still sooner have a pint of the many & varied quality Beers they make here.

Oh I don't know Cashy, the Beer travels well enough it's just that a lot of the Germans are rather parochial & tend not to be very open to new experiences as far as Beer & food are concerned, "Was der Bauer nicht kennt, frisst er nicht !" is a common expression here, loosely translated "What the farmer doesn't know, he won't eat !"
Plus local beers for local people, seems an oft expressed maxim here & yes there are quite a few Breweries that are still competitive against the multi million internationals, and long should it remain so giving such a range & diversity which has slowly disappeared from the UK, although more Micro Brewers are starting to set up & revitalise the Beer interest in UK which to my mind can only be a good thing.

Not knocking Eric or his info I think it's more a regional mindset, I remember chatting with him about his time in Germany the other year when we were over. I mean I can travel the length & breadth of the Country & I can guarantee I'd find the likes of Krombacher, Becks, Veltins & Diebels Alt in most places, but the likes of Kölsch, Einbecker & Augustiner not so readily unless I was in & around the area these fine beverages are brewed, that or some enterprising wheeler & dealer sees a spot in the market where he is & "imports" it.

Re: Black &Tan
Tried many different ones during my trips to Berlin, RheinD and the "clutch" stations. Subtle differences but also some quite specific ones between say Berlin & Dusseldorf, although as DinG says some brews are everywhere - Grolsch, Lowenbrau etc. Wherever, it was almost always good, especially with Apfelkorn chasers and the major brewers certainly ship their brews around
