I remember "skating" on the Swanee in the days when we used to get snow and ice in Winter. Also picking cotton grass seeds which we were convinced was the same as the American stuff the mills made into cloth. I think that's why it was called the Swanee.

Talking about old shops, I was thinking the other day jus how many shops have gone or changed use in Union Road Ossy, since I was a lad, 50 years ago. Oposite St. Pauls school there was Nellie Barnes green grocer Makinsons sweet shop, a pram shop, can't remember the name. Further up there was Walmsley's hairdressers and Kershaws Ladies and Gents Hairdressers, and not forgetting the post office both at the Town Hall (sorry Gayle, civic theatre) and Moorend, its quite depressing realy, anybody know any more
