Couple of times. Once when I ran out in front of a van by the Load after watching Superman at (that Cinema up by the Load????) ... had my mac on cape style ... you know, top button done up around your neck. Probably my super powers saved me Another time when I fell off my dad's bike in front of another van ... bike was a little big for me. I should have stolen a smaller one And climbing up the inside of the old factory chimbly at the paint works on Rishton Rd. Getting chased and nearly caught by one of Basil Brierly's homicidal pigs. And that rope swing, out over the Stink at the bottom of Swales's pasture ... I think that being immersed in the Stink would have done a number on anyone

Forgot to mention my first big haul on a Capstan Full Strength, by the bog in Mercer Park, near the tennis courts ... I gagged and coughed so bloody hard that conkers fell out of that beautiful big oak tree

Eric...they always say if your bound to be hanged you need not fear the shot(meaning you will die in the way the fate has intended for you - but then I guess you don't believe in that stuff) You will probably live to be a hundred.

Re: How close did we come to killing ourselves as kids????

nearly got run over by a trolley bus as a kid. was so close it actually hit my cricket bat which was only inches infront of my leg. got a right old bollocking from the driver and a clout from my old man. it worked a treat as i was always more careful than my mates crossing roads after this. in todays mamby pamby world i could have had a month off school with mental health issues and my parents could have sued the corporation for at least a new cricket bat and free travel for a year.

Leaving it as late as you could to jump off the back of the bus as it pulled away from the traffic lights at the end of Queens Road leaving everybody else to walk back up the hill from the bus stop outside the hospital.

To be honest I do not remember the Hippodrome, I know that I am getting old but not old enough to remember where it was but I seem to remember being told that it may have been on Ellisons tenement where the fair used to be held every year, As you say, Lower down than the bus depot. maybe Atarah can help on this ?

one side of the hippodrome was on ellisons tenement taddy, the entrance door was on the steet think its ellison st? but above the bus depot.we used to get into it by a little gap on the back virtually on the tenement. i can now recall the poor lads name that fell off the roof was called David Masterson who lived on Blackburn Rd,

I suppose that we took risks when we were children too...running along the railway track behind Highams factory...asking the fireman to 'chuck us a cob of coal'...which they frequently did.
Walking along this embankment looking for coal that had fallen from trains.....we did this too.
It was not so dangerous..or that is what we told ourselves.....trains leaving Accrington or going into Accrington station had slowed down to a walking pace at that point.

Though the transport police who copped us one time would not agree.
He took us home...and Ma gave us a telling off.
Not for being near the line, but for getting caught...!
