I might have imagined this...

When I lived in Plantation St in the 60s, I have a vague memory that when the Fire Brigade were needed to attend an incident, I used to hear a siren along the lines of an air raid warning, that I presume came from the Fire Station on Manchester Road but that we could hear where we lived.
Or is it my memory playing tricks?

I remember it too. It acted as a 'call-out' for the off-duty firemen, some of whom lived in Grange Lane and Manchester Rd in the firemen's houses

no your memory is not playing tricks...they did indeed use a siren like during war time.
We could hear it on Riley's hill.

I didn't live in Accrington when they sounded the siren for a fire but they did in Todmorden. Three actually, one in each valley. I also remember them from war time.
