Last proper school, not college.

My last proper school was Rhyddings. We had to go to Moor End in Ossy which was quite a walk from Pendle Street. Mum and Dad never even for a nano second thought of walking us to the school. Me and Dave Gaffney who lived next door went on our own on our first day!!!! 11 years old mind. Turned up in the yard and waited for lord knows what??? Someone came out, told us what class we were in and that was it for the next 4 years until Pilkington Bros.

Mine was Billinge Grammar School, after that I went to technical college.

I did many a collage at the first school I went to, Moor End County Primary School, like the thread starter.

The last school I went to was Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn, and I didn't do one collage there, so decided I'd better go off to art collage.

Rhyddings had 3 bits to it from one end of Ossy to the other. Moor End for 1st years then Rhyddings proper in the middle for most years then the annex you mention. Why it was called a tech is as you say Cashman, a mystery???? Anyone ????

only thing i can think is it was 1 up from chrissys n those schools, but 1 below grammer school. they used to send "BorderLiners" from 11 plus to it, i actually passed n should have gone to Q.E.G.S. in blackburn, but thats summat else. Rhyddings was not part of it until think my 3 rd year, they then amalgamated n sent all the top pupils down.

The Accrington Technical School building later became Accrington Grammar School.

When the Grammar School was founded the Technical School moved to the building in Ossy, taking the name with it.

There's a really interesting article about the development of the education system in Accrington on this link, which only takes a few seconds to download.

re: Last proper school, not college.

'This (the old Tech/Grammar School building) was to be built at an estimated cost of £6,000 and a competition was launched for the design of the new school. The winning design overshot the £6,000 by 100 per cent and the contract was accordingly given to the second best, which was to cost £6,000. The new project was regarded with some scepticism by a section of the population who referred to the new building as "the White Elephant on Blackburn Road'.

You must have misread the thread title, it says proper school.
