We used to up the coppice with a bottle of water and jam butties, we were out from around 10am til teatime. We swam in the lodges up there.
If the weather wasn't too good we'd go to the baths (St James St) and spend all day in there, spent a lot of time in Gatty and Milnshaw parks as well.

I remember sitting on top of the Coppice looking down Avenue Parade and there was not a single car all the way down to the centre of Accy, mind you, could only just see it for the smoke!!!

Most of my 6 weeks summer holidays were spent in and around the Plantation (now Foxhill nature reserve) or playing Cricket on the Triangle which was between the Plantation and the Tip. but one week was always of to the Costa Del Roughit (Blackpool) with Ma, Pa and Grandma, number 10 Moor Street South Shore.

Re: Summer School Holidays, where did you go, what did you get up to?
It felt like the school holidays lasted 18 weeks....and you were right about the weather too.
We used to build dens and dams up Priestley clough....we walked up to the Five arches and spent all day playing various games.......cowboys and indians, hide and seek, king of the Castle, Heroes and Villains......I don't recall taking anything to eat, but we played out most of the day.
We also spent time up the 'Rec'...Bullough Park, we played on the streets, with skipping ropes, marbles, whips and tops, hopscotch.
We had a real good time, lots of fun, lots of activity and we didn't bother anybody

Did all the things everyone describes ... just different hunting grounds. Always 2 weeks holiday, mostly Fleetwood, then Coppice, Cock Bridge, Edisford bridge, Highams Playing Fields, etc.
Picture of my friends at Highams during the Summer holidays, I, obviously, took the pictures:

Don't you just wish there had been the digi camera then instead of the little Brownie to snap more childhood memories. Would love to see some of our members' photo's of their playground haunts and friends. Come on .. dig 'em out.

You are right on with this .... used to get to Clevelys when I was young, and then Westcliffe-on-Sea where an uncle of mine had a chippy .... rest of the time, just went out to play .... spent a lot of time in Mercer Park .... they had the crappiest putting game, but as a kid it was great fun ... you had to pick up your putter and ball at the bowling green. Spent a lot of time train spotting ... amazing how far one could get on a twopenny platform ticket ... or one way half fare to Ossy from Accrington which was a halfpenny less

I was one of the lucky guys who went quite a few times. I remember early one morning and I was the only one awake. The sun was up and I went to the window which was open, looked towards the river across the field that had a light mist on it with nothing but sheep and rabbits in front of me! A magical view that has stayed with me for the best part of 50 years!!! Fantastic!
