memories are really coming back now. Me and my mate used to tell our parents we were sleeping over at each others and then cath the bus to manchesters heaven and hell. one big room in hell with no seats. Orange juice and piece of toast when you left in the morning.

I really love the way Tony Joe White sings it. He wrote it and means it when he sings it!
Its still fabulous sung by Randy Crawford and Brook Benton though. its a fantastic song.

Re: Take me back.(soul)

ABC, radio has been playing Brook Benton's version (recorded 1970 ) two or three times a week here. I think it would have to be in the top three of my favourite songs, never get sick of it. I think Brook was underestimated in my view. Its a shame, he was only 56 when he died. ( real name Benjamin Peay : of The Sandmen )

bit late al, but its took me a few years to even focus in manchester of that era. blame illegal substances. but was that shop the "Toggery"? if so was a few of em scattered around greater manchester, a bunch of lads that worked in the shops, formed a group- The Toggery 5, who appeared up accy con a couple of times, a great group who never actually made the big time, due to the "Hollies" @ "Four Tops" pinching 2 of there numbers n having smash hits wi em, but thats another story.

we used to go down some small shop on Abbey St to get old Tamla in the early 70's..the Gezeer sold most 45's for 5p.(16 shillings and sixpence).but I reckon he saved some good stuff for himself.

Re: Take me back.(soul)

I think your right Mr C. I just had a look at Manchester Beat & clicked on shops & clothes, It mentions Toggery, but I thought it was down a side street accross from Lewises, but its a long time ago. I remember the Toggery 5 alright, up the Con, what two songs are you talking about by the Hollies & 4 Tops. Kurtis was a good shop as well. PS. Wynonnie put me on to Manchester Beat, so have a look Steeljack, Jaysay, Mancie, and all the people of that era. Barack Obama Dresses like a Mod, could see him down the Wheel,
