Was King St Accy a Red Light area?

Many years ago, I remember my dad telling me that King St in Accrington was where 'ladies of the night' would ply their trade, I guess he was talking about the '40's & 50's. According to him, there were a lot of lodging houses down there that were used for this purpose. He also said that the (Big) Crown, (later Afrikas & Funnies, now Illumia beauty salon) was also a place the girls worked from, and he wouldn't ever take my mother in.
Has anyone else heard this?

Musgraves at the top of Albion Street was the place where you could get "something for the weekend", so it would be quite handy really!

Re: Was King St Accy a Red Light area?

Back in the old days, "something for the weekend" was a coded phrase for condoms (when barbers' shops used to sell such things, the hairdresser would finish scalping you and then ask "would you like a little something for the weekend, sir?"). Musgraves was a chemist/herbalist where a likely lad could buy such things (or so I'm told. ). Obviously, the phrase has fallen into disuse these days, now you can just pick them up on the shelves of any supermarket.
