What did you want to be when you grew up?

I started school when I was 4 and my Mum and Dad used to take me to Moffatt's on Church Street for my school socks. That was the first place I wanted to work. They used to send the money across to the cash desk in a container, on a cable I think, and the change came back. I think they used to show similar on "Are you Being Served?" Other than that, I was fascinated by the steam engines. I used to walk from Oswaldtwistle to Accrington with my Dad on a Saturday afternoon. When we got to Charter Street he used to lift me up to look over the "big wall" at the steam engines in the railway sidings. When we got to Broadway we used to go on a little roundabout at the market and listen to Uncle Dick selling his wares - he certainly had the gift of the gab!

Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young the only thing I ever wanted to be was a joiner, like my Father and when I left school that's exactly what I became and never regretted it one little bit

I wanted to be a vet and help lots poorly animals get better. Then I realised that it got a bit messy some times and some of those poorly animals produce a lot of poo - and it put me off. That and the 7 years you have to train.

Then I wanted to be a social worker but it all went horribly wrong when I discovered how badly social workers were paid and how much marketeers were paid.

Had to laugh at my 27 year son the other week when he put one of those comments up on Facebook: "When asked at school what I wanted to be, should have answered Lottery winner" .. well, would have solved lots of problems...

I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a nurse.....it was something I set my heart on from being little.

It took me quite a long time to achieve my ambition, but perseverance does pay off and I had the very best career......far better than I could ever have imagined.
