The Western Series were great, weren't they just? There was one on nearly every night of the week in the 1950's and 60's. Roy Rogers and Gene Autrey were the 'singing cowboys'. Then there was Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Mix, Kit Carson: all characters from famous comics of the day who were immortalised in Saturday cinema serials and later on TV.

If only we could turn the clock back!

We seem to have overlooked 'Wells Fargo', another epic series starring Dale Robertson as the eponymous hero.

Another Western series was Gun Smoke with James Arness as Marshall Matt Dillon, and his trusty side kick Chester, with the gammy leg, always remember him running down the street shouting Mr Dillon, Mr Dillon, what the hell was Chesters real name, I can picture him and remember him as Marshall Sam Mccloud, but his real name

That would be Dennis Weaver.

Another series was Hondo (Lane), about a jobbing cowboy and his yeller dog. I believe there was also a feature film made with John Wayne playing Hondo - though it was nowt like the series.

Re: What did you watch when you was a nipper?

Anyone recall a series from 1967/68 called Cimmaron Strip starring Stuart Whitman as a US Marshall. Entertaining at the time, but never quite took off in the way that some Western series did. Reckon it was mainly down to Whitman's role proving to be a bit naff!

A later series which I really enjoyed was 'Paradise' (later renamed Guns of Paradise), starring Lee Horsely as Ethan Cord, a reformed gunfighter charged with bringing up the orphaned kids of his sister. It ran from 1988 to 1981 only to be replaced by 'Dr Quin-Medicine Woman', which I thought was somewhat contrived - though the ratings spoke differently.
