Re: What was it called?
Yes, I wore a liberty bodice......with rubber buttons....used to bite bits off the rubber buttons, so my mum replaced them with metal buttons covered in cotton.
I don't wear them now, and I can't say I have seen them advertised anywhere.

Re: What was it called?
Back in the old days the houses were cold and draughty........bedrooms were akin to fridges. I know that we made ice lollies on the window ledge inside our back bedroom........and although it was as cold as charity, we ate them. Well it's a poor belly that can't warm an ice lolly.
We wore more skins than an onion.......I wore a vest, then a libery bodice and then an underslip then my school shirt, skirt and finally a school jumper or cardigan, which back then was wool..
We wore nearly as many clothes to go to bed in.......Ma used to warm the bed with a couple of bricks which were kept in the bottom of the kitchen range.
And they were the good old days!

Re: What was it called?
I remember wearing a vest then a liberty bodice which my mum had sewn a little pocket into. Because I had asthma a camphor square was put inside the pocket to help me breathe. Everyone at school would shout "Who stinks of Vicks" School days were not my happiest times!!

That just reminds me of a sign I have over my computer Margaret
The Golden Years
The golden years have come at last
I cannot see, I cannot pee
I cannot chew, I cannot screw
My memory shrinks, my hearing stinks
No sense of smell, I look like hell
My body's drooping, got trouble pooping.
The golden years have come at last......
The Golden years can kiss my ass.

I like the couple of bricks, Margaret, my mum used to use a stone sasparilla (can't remember how to spell it!) bottle from.. was it 'Stanton's' on Union Rd (after New Lane). It was still warm in the morning when we got up

Re: What was it called?
Yes we had one of those too, but that usually ended up in Ma and Pa's bed....for precisely the reason you stated......it stayed warm for a long time.
Four of us used to sleep in a double bed...two at the top, and two at the bottom(hope you are reading this Mancie - not a typical Tory upbringing is it?)......and we used to have the bed piled up with blankets, candlewick covers(which, I can now admit, I used to pick the candlewick out of) and if it was really cold......Dads greatcoat went on the bed too.
No carpets on the floor......cold, cold lino, with a couple of 'rag rugs' down.
But hey, I am here to remember it.....so must be made of stern stuff.
