Back to the thread. What was that stick (honest) thing my Dad used on his face when he cut himself shaving?? Seemed to stop the bleeding??

It was a styptic pencil....you can still buy them.

You know when you have a "hang-nail" - a loose bit of skin at the side of a finger nail, my aunt used to call it a "stepmother jag". Anyone else heard that? Perhaps it was an old Rishtonian saying.

nope...that's what we call them too...OK, I'm only down the road in Clayton.......but I'm sure I have heard other people use that phrase for them.

Na mi old grannie used to say that and she were born and bred in Ossy

My mum came from Atherton and my dad Blackburn and they both said Step mother jag, as I do now.

A pummy (pumice)stone is not the same - pummy stones rubbed the hard skin off your feet.

I recall it as a dobby stone but an internet search decribes a dobby stone as having a hole - which it didn't
