What was it called?

Those things you saw every day when you was a nipper but not sure what it was called due to less grey matter! What was the name of that cloth/lace thing on the back of Dads chair to stop the grease stain from his barnet??

Re: What was it called?

Antimacasser - not sure of right spelling.
Macasser was a type of hair oil - the 'anti' bit related to keeping it off the upholstery

PS just had a quick google - spelling almost right
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/antimacassar

Re: What was it called?

Before we set off on tour with a Batty Holt's coach we had to change the antimacassa on the top of the seats if they were greasy or dirty from the last customer head.

If I remember correctly ours were white with BH embroidered in them.
Coach tours were a bit posh in those days (1965 ish) and before you start we didn't have a horse pulling it. It was a long way to Lake Garda.

Yes, I remember then too, and you are spot on Margaret, with why they were called AntiMaccassars.
We just called them Chair back covers and my grandma used to crochet her chair back covers.......grandad used to fall asleep in the chair and then walk around with his bald head the same pattern as the covers.......he didn't need the back of his chair protecting...he had no hair(to speak of).......Uncle Harry(his son) had thick dark wavy hair which he would slick down with Brilliantine......a colourless oily liquid that made his hair shine........he was in the RAF........an original Brylcreem boy(except it was Brilliantine).

Never heard of them, but "Healed yer Lungs" would be a rough guess.
