Re: wot treats.
Never liked pobbies - thought they were yucky. We used to have mashed potato with eggs beaten into it, we called it "Brookin" - luscious, it was.
Does anyone remember barley pudding? It was made with barley kernels, and tasted absolutely wonderful - like rice pudding but richer and creamier. If anyone knows where I can get barley kernels and has a recipe, I would be so grateful.
And can you remember how long it took to spend 3d at the sweetshop?......

Re: wot treats.
Glad I found this - no one I know has ever heard of "pobbies". My mother used to make beef stew when I was little and she would always say, "do you want pobbies"? By this she meant did I want a lot of bread mushed up in it - I always said yes - mmmmmmmmm delicious!!

My mum used to make Home made crisps..........they are lovely and miles more crispier than packeted crisps!!!
She also made Potatoe cakes............hmmmmmm loads of butter!!!
And home made onion curry, poured over roasted potatoes!! That was a proper winter warmer and I still make that now for my own family!!

Gosh, reminded me of cheese, soaked in milk in a small pie tin (not deep one) ..just put under grill and eat with toast, loved this, sometimes egg was dropped in. Of course, was cooking cheese .. can you get this now, perhaps under another name ? lovely and stringy as you ate it ..

ah the memories of pobbies, my grandad used to make me those when i was ickle....
our treat when we where kids was on a friday night, mum would take us to the shop and buy us crisps and a can of pop to sit infront of the telly and watch the A-team, and we only ever went to the chippy in the summer holidays on the way back from Blackpool, nowadays kids live off the chippy
