Re: Asus a7v8x - x
As soon as pc is switched on this is what comes up
Nvidia Gforce MX440 AGP8X VBios
Version 4.18.20.22. VGA
128. OMB RAM
Then it loads up ASUS screen
Could the graphic card acting as boot or does it nvidia need an upgrade

Re: Asus a7v8x - x
The Nvidia screen is just a GFx chip POST, nowt to worry about.
The error about system disk suggests that your HD has either a) died or b) lost it master boot record. The latter could be due to many reasons from virus infection, or something as simple as a bad sector. you need to get hold of a LiveCD and boot from that, you can then try to access the HD. If it can then its MBR thats screwed. You can fix this by using "fdisk /mbr" or by installing a new boot sector from something like a linux CD/DVD. If a linux livecd can't access teh HD its knackered

Re: Asus a7v8x - x
its technically possible but not something you want to/need to/should do, its either there and working or not(as in your case)
another way of checking teh disk is OK/knackered is if anyone you know has an external HD caddy(waves!) that you can put it in and then plug into say a shiny laptop. I can't get the caddy up to you at the moment(lack of time) but if you can collect from ours your welcome to borrow it

Re: Asus a7v8x - x
you put the HD in the caddy and then its a USB connection into say your laptop. If you can see the files on it then its just MBR thats knack. If it doesn't even power/spin up then the disk is dead

Re: Asus a7v8x - x
you can try using system recovery within windows, IIRC there is an option somewhere to just redo MBR, its so long since I installed windows

Be careful taking out the hard drive, any warranty may be invalidated

Re: Asus a7v8x - x
Just to let you know pc now fixed, seemingly started of as a HD failure, booted with xp disk then it booted from HD, done chkdsk complete no probs & nvidia drivers removed & updated installed, we seem to have put it down to being 2 nvidia drivers been installed & causing conflict so thats now sorted
Rebooted fine after that & none of the screens we were getting at the start of thread
