Everyone's patience stops somewhere, Margaret!

You're right, about money and, when things go wrong it always seems to happen all at once doesn't it.

Funnily enough, this computer has only been set up a day,and up until a couple of days before that it had been with a computer repair man, for about 3 months!! Said man had ordered a part for it which took so long to arrive, and then was wrong when it came, he was very good and apologetic, although not his fault, but my t'other half was fed up and very pleased to get it back, and then this happens! I thought he was going to cry!

That`s terrible service, most computer parts are available with next day delivery. I get most parts from ebuyer and even with economy delivery it`s here within two or three days.

yes Jen, you are right ......patience isn't inexhaustible, but pets and children...well they look at you with those big eyes and you forgive them...maybe not right away.......

As for mending computers - well, I'm not that brave.
I once bought myself a book about fiddling with computers...one of those 'Dummies' books.
I looked at it, but that was as far as I got...the book went to the charity shop in one of my rare 'fling outs'.
I guess it is best to leave it to those who know what they are doing.

Re: Computer been knocked over

To be fair, I have used him before and he's always been very good. He said this supplier is one he's used for years and often, he was very annoyed with them and very apologetic, I didn't nag at him because he's always given good service before. I passed it off as 'One of those things' but it was a relief to get it back.

Sod's law that my dog then sends it flying.

She was in the naughty corner for definite! She's a strange dog-now and again she'll just randomly go pottering about the room as if looking for something to mess about with! As I said never has she gone under the desk before, though.

It's working now so we're both happy, I'd have hated to have had to call the guy up again and tell him this !lol

Yes I guess so-I know she didn't mean to do it and doesn't understand what she's done..I'll give her a cuddle in a bit, not sure himself has forgiven her yet though!

As for the book, well, you tried! I'm sure I'd not even understand a book on computing let alone be able to learn from one!

Re: Computer been knocked over

My problem is the reverse of what has occurred here, something will be working champion and I decide to hoover out the inside or I delete a file that I think I don't need, and before you know it its 3 in the morning and I just managed to get it back performing like it was at 9 in the previous evening. You've got to laugh haven't you,............. or perhaps not

Vacuuming inside your PC is not a good idea, it generates static and can kill components. A can of compressed air is the way to do it.

It occurred to me at 2.45am in the morning that vacuming out the computer was not a good idea, I haven't done it since, I didn't have a can of compressed air so I used an air freshener, it still doesn't work, but it smells nice..............only joking.

Just while you're in the frame of mind that you might have lost it forever, consider what problems it would have caused if you had lost it (other than financially, through replacement).

I mean emails stored locally, photos, documents, passwords, licences etc.

If you would have lost something important, forever, then it's time to consider your backup options. For most people, a USB stick or external drive is good enough, but maybe that's the basis for another thread.

Yes.....that is so true.
I lost a lot of stuff when one of my computers decided to commit suicide.....my current computer reminds me weekly to do it...and I always put it off for later. I must do it...NOW!

Very good point-this has happened to me before. It wouldn't have mattered so much with this particular computer in this case (most of my work docs are stored on my netbook and photographs are stored electronically) but I remember being gutted when I lost all my music a few months back. Some of it totally irreplaceable!

Re: Computer been knocked over

There are ways of retrieving lost files, even from formatted drives, not guaranteed to work, but worth a shot.

Bare foot on tiled floor and touch taps before touching components

Those utilities are no good if the drive has been physically damaged by being knocked over by a dog. Recovery then involves specialist "forensic level" attention at the cost of thousands.

For most users, even home users, the data on their computer is more valuable (financially or sentimentally) than the hardware.
