Help big style

Ok my sisters comp is playing up and ive got the job of trying to sort it out. Thing is she cant download anything from the net. What she was trying to do was to read a pdf file but it wouldnt let her. We tried updating her adobe acrobat reader - but wouldnt download, we tried downloading otherstuff like AVG when we found out that no antivirus on it and still wouldnt let us do it. Spug came up with the idea of looking at mine and trying to sort it out that way seeing as it is AOHELL shes on. Also came up with the idea of taking AOHELL off and reinstalling it (my idea)

Anyway i have a copy of AVG on disc with another one for spybot. Also got a copy of AOHELL. Anyway what do i do first install AVG and spybot first and run them to find out what is happening, or uninstall and reinstall AOHELL first and then run avg and spybot?

If this dont work we havent got a clue - any ideas for me?

Re: Help big style

I think the idea of taking AOHELL off is a good one, even better if you don't put it back on

I'd investigate from the firewall side first

Re: Help big style

thing is you see whats happened its not downloading anything - not even windows updates she hasnt been using this comp for about 3 months because of the power pack went on it - one night her partner was using it and it shot little sparks out the back of it and she didnt have time to get it sorted. It rode round in the boot of her car for a couple of weeks before she got round to taking it to the shop.

Re: Help big style

Ok im back from sisters.

This what i did - tried to put spybot on - damn thing crashed - lovely blue screen came up but spybot was still there but wouldnt let me use it - so deleted it off the system. Then a lovely blue screen came up again, let it restart and run disc check again, installed avg - which worked. Came up with 8 trojan downloaders - one was generic4, the others had dc and fl in the bits that came after - deleted them. AVG also downloaded updates!!! Plus it downloaded windows updates. So tried installing spybot again - lovely blue screen again, restarted it all again. Anyway tried downloading adobe acrobat reader wouldnt download. So uninstalled aol - id took a copy of aol down - but it was the wrong disc so im going down tomorrow - any ideas what else

Re: Help big style

Spybot is a bit of an oddity at the mo. We've got it on PCs with XP and it runs like a little good un. Tried it on the laptop with Vista and it is a pain in the bum.

Re: Help big style

she uses aol and outlook for her email, kids say msn kept throwing things up - which when i questioned little nephew further - he said one of his mates had a trojan (who he talked to on msn) and said that he'd got it as well, but other wise it works fine.
