Sounds like you have a corrupt bit of software that is causing Windows problems. Try upgrading Media Player(Or get a better piece of software to do the job )It is probably worth re-installing Direct X as well as it also controls sound effets and it may be this that is doing something dodgy.
As a note this is one of the reasons I don't use Windows. They integrate everything so tightly that one thing can have a dramatic effect on others. With Linux this simply can't happen as the sound and video systems are completely seperate from all other processes and whilst they can die themselves they can't take anything else with them. Poor coding from teh worlds biggest software house.
