Re: Linux

whatever it is there is a universal cure

1 : enter bios and selct boot from cdrom as primary boot device

Got the free disk abut a month ago, Ian tried to istall it on the xp computer, and discovered the dvd drive was faulty. I've fitted a new dvd drive, tried to install Ubuntu on a separate partition, it failed three times at part 4. On Monday I gave it another go and let it install within WINXP, after 20 mins of chugging along it ejected the disk, couldn't find Ubuntu, so gave up, then on Friday it popped up on screen with a choice of selecting which OS to start the computer, clicked on Ubuntu, it then spent 15 mins sorting itself out, all sorts of files running up the screen, when it finished it came up with a box for user name and password.

Never told it I needed either, and no matter what, it won't let me in.

Done a search of files including hidden files, cant find any passwords, I don't use them as only me uses these computers.

Re: Linux

sounds like you may have a faulty disk if it keeps spitting it out at teh same part of teh instalation as thats what happens if a disk is faulty it tries for a while to read the disk but eventualy gives up and spits it out or just spins endlesly

if thats whats happening and i have understood properly then i woudl go for faulty instalation disk and you could try downloading it from the internet and burning it to your own cdr

now im not sure if this will work as i have very little experience of linux

if you are running windows xp on a seperate partition tehre is a program called cain and abel that shows login passwords for user accounts but imnot sure if it would expose teh linux passwords , tehre maybe a similar program linux based im not sure

Re: Linux

You usually set a user name and password during installation - you sure you didn't set one?
Have you tried leaving them empty and pressing enter

Can't do that, the computer has a separate partition to recover as it was the day it was bought, I also have 5 CD's it made when I first started the thing up.

You should have selected a username though, Ubuntu uses this as the name of your /home folder IE /home/Retlaw.
And don't forget Linux is case sensitive

NO after I had installed a new DVD reader/writer it didn't spit the disk out, It just failed to get past section or part 4 of creating a separate partitiion, for Ubuntu to work in, thats why I eventually let it install within XP.

Just tried that I can't get in there either says I'm not recognised.

Getting fed up with this. I also tried their web site 6 weeks ago to download the free version, couldn't get that either, thats why I sent for the free disk.
If this is how good linux is, then if I can't get into it what good is it.

I don't use passwords other than to log onto the internet, no need.
