PC Freeze Ups - Help Needed

My mums PC was freezing up ie No response from mouse or keyboard shortly after start up. It had 98ME on it so I reformatted with 98SE but it still freezes up the same.
My Daughters PC was running XP and doing the same and after stripping out all but essential components, reformats and finally dropping back to 98SE it still doesnt work.
Someone told me it was probably hardware related ie fault on motherboard or processor. Does anyone know if this is true or is there some way I can save either of these machines.

Re: PC Freeze Ups - Help Needed

CPU isn't too hot, they will run happily up to 60 C

Does sound like hardware though.

Can`t see how I can data clean something that`s just been re-formatted.
Also it`s never been online before or since reformat.
I`ll have a look under the fan.

Windows 98SE

No drivers installed for Sound or Graphics as it freezes before it is possible to do so.

Re: PC Freeze Ups - Help Needed

do a low level sector check on the hard disk. If you have access to a spare HD try installing to that.

also try unpluging everything that you don't actually need. i.e. CD drive, spare HDs, every USB device, etc to make sure there is no contentions

Re: PC Freeze Ups - Help Needed

You probably think Im thick but I cant find how to do a low level sector check.

There aint much else attached but it`s an Abit KT7 Raid board with no onboard sound or graphics so I cant connect monitor without card which is a Geforce 4 as I said with no drivers loaded due to freeze ups and no USB recognition either.

Re: PC Freeze Ups - Help Needed

Unplug teh CD drive internally leaving just the one Hard disk, GFx card, (take out sound card temporarily) memory(one stick only if you have more than one).

Try it at this point. If it works start adding things one by one till it breaks again. Then you have a clue as to what could be wrong. post teh results of your tests.

If it still hangs with just the bare minumum then you need to try a spare hard disk.

To do a low level sector check follow teh details in this article

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

It`s gonna be monday now before I can mess with this any further as I`ll be wading thru gigs on the east coast all w-end.

I`ll probably be whining again then.
