Yes, I did. He ended up buying a new one as well. I've been asking around and it seems that it's a problem with the big PS2's, if you know what I mean. The only cure is to clean the laser thing with alcohol. We tried dusting ours but it didn't work. Try to follow the idiot guide as you have nothing to lose. I'm so sorry, that I couldn't help and good luck. xx
