Re: Windows 10

If you upgraded from 7 to 10 and have not wiped the 7 settings then I am told that you can backtrack, but I don't know how without looking it up.

This tells you how.

I hope this helps...and in the first paragraph it says'if you have upgraded in the last month '
But if you look further down it does explain that you can go back if you upgraded a while ago.

Re: Windows 10

I did not take up the option of Windows 10.
I had a look at it on someone else's machine and decided it was not for me.
I suppose at some point I will have to upgrade to some new version...but right now 7 fits the bill for me.

Re: Windows 10

I resisted windows 10 for ages but I'm glad I moved. It's better than 7 once you get used to it. You can get rid of all that big stuff on your start menu if you don't like it and it has some good bits that are better than Windows 7. You will have to change at some point so might as well stick with it

Re: Windows 10

Neil, it was formulated for touch screens rather than for mouse and keyboard.
I do not like the idea of the automatic updates...I like to choose what I want to update.
And it looked and felt ungainly.I really did not like it and felt that it would curtail my use of the computer...a friend of mine tried it out and gave it three weeks before reverting back...she could not get used to it.(and she is a generation younger than me too)

Yes, at some point it will become impossible to continue with 7, but I cannot see the point of changing until I need to.
Windows 7 does all that I want to do...so I will stick with it.

What are the good bits?
What you consider to be the good bits may not be any good to me.
'Good bits' are very subjective...only good if you can use them effectively.

That you can go back to 7 is a good bit

Re: Windows 10

I always wondered why a giant company like Microsoft would give away something which had cost them money to develop, would then give it away FREE.
They are not philanthropists and I figured there had to be something in it for them.
It was the bait on the hook.
Not all gifts are good gifts....remember the Trojan horse.

This was one of the reasons I was reluctant to take up the offer.
When I saw the product, I did not like it one bit...so my decision was easy.

Microsoft promise that they will protect your privacy, but they will not say what information they gather about the user.
They also want to control when and what updates you get. Now you can call me a cynical old baggage, but how much more will they want to control in the future?

They make a product and make users feel like they are getting a very nice gift and they install it on their systems of their own volition...the Microsoft take control little by little. Sinister or what ?

I bought a new desk top last year...one of the main criteria in my choice was that it did not run on Windows 10.

Re: Windows 10

Yes, that is an option for those who know how to do it.
I admit that I do not know how to do this(and I suspect I am not alone in this)...but if I had Windows 10 I would make it my business to find out.

Who knows what plans Microsoft have in the future.
I cannot see a large profit driven company like them giving away something unless there was something in it for them.

Re: Windows 10

Must admit though I do prefer Windows 7, Windows 10 can be made to look like and run like Windows 7 but it`s a bit of a faf. Now mines all set up it runs great though and 7 wasn`t an option because drivers weren`t available for some devices.

Re: Windows 10

This tells you how to go revert to a previous version if you`ve upgraded and don`t like W10 - https://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how...dows-7-or-8.1/
Only works if you still have the windows.old folder, this gets deleted after 30 days but if you copy or rename it while i`s still there then you could revert back after any amount of time

Re: Windows 10

Your post about turning off the updates and the snooping made me look to see how it is done...Just in case I ever need to know.

I read that about reverting and I just hope people have kept their old Windows 7....though I guess that many of them won't have.
You are Lucky Gpick(well perhaps lucky isn't the right word..maybe savvy is nearer the mark) that you have the knowledge to make windows 10 look like windows 7.
My friend had no end of problems with her printer when she upgraded.
She asked me to help her sort it out(me!)....and in the end she decided that she would revert back.
It was within the 30 days though...so it was fairly easy to do

While I would not consider myself a computer geek....I am not afraid to own up to my limitations, but am always ready to learn...or at least try to

Re: Windows 10

Windows 10 works like 7 did with enhancements. Windows 8 was horrible. You don't have to have a touch screen and works perfectly with keyboard and mouse. I've never used a PC with a touch screen and as I set the monitor away from me I wouldn't want to either. Might be useful having a touch screen laptop.
You can turn off updates and do them manually if you like. I avoided 8 because it was terrible and stayed away from 10 thinking it was the same until I used 10, then I was happy to have it on my new PC. I was concerned some of the old software and equipment I use wouldn't work on it but I can run old DOS radio programming software in it just like I could 7. I've not yet found something I couldn't do with my old windows 7 PC
