Re: Windows 10

I've downloaded the ISO file and burnt it to DVD but not yet had time to install it.
Do you loose all your data and programs or is it just the O/S that's updated?
I have a mirror image of my PC backed up in a USB hard drive and all my data on another but I want an easy passage if I go ahead and install Win10

Re: Windows 10

You might want to check your privacy settings, I would be turning some of this stuff off.

1. Microsoft creates a unique advertising ID for each user on a device running Windows 10. This can be turned off in the Privacy Settings.
2. What you say or type may be processed by Microsoft, for instance by the operating system's Cortana service or by providing spelling correction.
3. Windows supports a location service that allows apps and services, such as Find My Device, to request your location in the world. This can be turned off in the Privacy settings.
4. Microsoft syncs some Windows settings automatically when you sign in to a Microsoft account. This is done to provide users with a personalized experience across devices. Data that gets synced includes installed apps and their settings, web browser history and favorites, passwords and wireless network names, and addresses of shared printers.
5. Telemetry data is collected by Microsoft. This includes installed software, configuration data and network and connection data. While some of it can be turned off in the Settings, not all can.

Re: Windows 10

2 hours? Now you're frightening me!
That means I'll never sort it.
I thought it would do it automatically.

Let us know how you like it Frank........I haven't plucked up the courage to reserve it.
I am waiting to see how it is received by the folk on here....whether it is easy to use and get used to....My brush with Vista really put me off new OS's

Re: Windows 10

Mine's ready for downloading(I reserved it) but I can't remember how to back up on my Touro. I thought I'd better do that before I try it for chance I make my usual messup.
So I'm stuck at the moment.

Re: Windows 10

Just had a word with the guy who built my PC.
He suggests I leave it until you experts have found all the bugs and Microsoft have sorted them.
Good idea, I wouldn't know a bug if it bit me!

See you in 10 years then

Anyway. I left my PC on today and it downloaded the update and so I decided to risk it and updated....

So far so good. Everything so far seems to be working fine

Yes, but Rob.....you have to admit that you are computer fluent(as opposed to some of us who are just about computer literate).
Do you recommend it or is it too early in the game to say it is a pleasant operating system?

Re: Windows 10

I downloaded Win10 a few days ago and decided to install it yesterday.
The PC kept showing a message "Cannot install windows 10 on a USB flash drive"
I had no USB devices plugged in and after three atempts I decided to look at the FAQ on the Windows forum.
I finished up editing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE setting in the Registry. Changing the value of file from 1 to 0.
After that Windows 10 installed within an hour and up to now seems trouble free.
All my software, files, passwords and setting have been retained.
Lets hope it stays that way.
