bbciplayer

great little thing this bbciplayer that the bbc kindly puts on the internet for people to watch shows they may have missed but at the risk of sounding a wee bit cynical is it really a good thing

a couple of years ago the bbc tried pushing the government to bring in an internet license so that basically anyone who has the internet has to pay an internet license fee to the bbc , now my memory is a bit vague on the reasons why it was denied but i think it was due to the bbc not realy providing that many services via the internet to justify them been able to charge an internet license

could this iplayer business be the start of a few stepping stones the bbc needs so that it can go back to the government and say well we do more now via the internet and we need the license as people are watching our shows on the internet because in theory you could do away with your TV license and just watch your shows on the bbc website

if you have a lcd tv or one of these modern TV's you could put a small pc tower next to it and just watch tv via the internet and not need to worry about a tv license as you can own a TV and not pay a license as long as you can show that you have no connections to an Ariel or satellite

I may just be paranoid but i think the bbc will try for this internet license again in the near future

Nope, at the moment so long as the programme isn't a 'live' broadcast it can be watched without a licence, though for how long who knows??

Re: bbciplayer

if they do bring in a licence for the internet are the bbc going to block people from outside the UK from viewing the bbc website or are they going to hunt people down world wide for not having an internt licence

to be honest i see the TV licence as an infingment on our democratic right of choice and an internet licence is just another obsurd tax that will be eventually forced upon us , how they have the gaul to try this beggars belief especialy when people are trying to scrap the TV licence

its about time the licence fee was scrapped and teh bbc were made to fend for themselves and compete with its rivals on an even basis

i know the licence is there apparently because the bbc provides and is obligated to make educational programing but lets face it the govenment could make a law saying that any broadcasting service has to make a certain percentage of its shows educational or they dont get to transmit

lol this bbc malarky irritates the hell of me especialy now they are moving in on the internet and i cant see the govenment refusing for too long because of teh money they will get if every single internet user has to have a licence and also johnathan ross will be due another payrise soon so the money will have to come from somewhere

another predictiction of mine is that if they succeed they will charge a small fee for the first few years of about £20 per year so that people dont see it as worth argueing about but withing 10 years i reakon they will raise it to over £100

like i said i may jsut be paranoid about the bbc but part of me feels this iplayer buisness is just the start of the bbc's relaunch into making us pay them for having an internet connection

Interesting post accyman.. it makes you wonder dosent it?Cant comment too much till I know a little more about it but surely if the bbc can grab us for watching this iplayer they will do.
Ive used it and personaly its been great for watching stuff iver missed , but No way would I start paying twice for tv.
If you have a tv license it entitles you to use as many tvs as you like within the home so surely the iplayer would fall into that catgory wouldnt it ?

Re: bbciplayer

The BBC have been blocking all their live internet coverage of the Olympics to areas outside of the UK , only allowed to publish results but no video links, seems all national broadcasting companies around the world had to sign similar agreements with the IOC .
So much for the 'internet' being open to all and without censorship or borders

I did think they were already blocking overseas access to iPlayer content.

Re: bbciplayer

Reading their FAQ as soon as iplayer can stream programmes as they are shown live then a license fee would be required so it doesn't need new legislation, only new feature of iplayer.

looks like thats how they are going to sneak it in then ,if you have no TV but have internet they will still require you to have a licence just incase you should look at their site although the BBC have actualy pressed for a totaly seperate licence for people who have internet so you would pay a tv licence and an internet licence

i thought they made enough money from corrupt phone in competitions but i guess enough is never enough for the bbc

Re: bbciplayer

How about they just change the silly BBC advert at the beginning of every iPlayer clip with a real world advert? Problem solved.
