Broadband Help.

Okay, looking into getting some type of broadband. Seems we live to far away to get any kind of cable connection. The only otion I have is HughesNet. Are any of you tech guys familiar with them. To hook up the satilite dish and cable they want $399. Then it's a monthly charge of $59.99 for their basic connection.

Any guidance suggestions would be most appreciated!

Brian

Re: Broadband Help.

is there no plans for wifimax or anything else from there? How far are you from a major city? how about giving us a google map link of where you live?

Satellite is not a very good solution as its asymmetrical and pings etc are abysmal.

Re: Broadband Help.

Ian, you're talking to a guy who can barely turn this thing on! I'm not sure how to google a map for ya. It's Culpeper, Virginia. Pretty rural where we live. I know right down the road they can get verizon broadband but I live up a dirt road. There's only 2 houses on the road.

I'd find it much easier to find a white cabbage!

Thanks Ian, I may pick some up if I make it over the end of April! As for the Google Map. That is pretty cool how it does that. This is the best I can do. I got a nice look of Culpeper but wasn't sure how to copy it to this page. I copied this. Can you guys bring that up right to Culpeper? Or do I continue to prove that 4 years of college doesn't keep one totally idiot proof?

Thanks Mancie. Hopefully between Virginia Broadband and HughesNet I can at least have some healthy competition to get the costs down. Thanks for all your help Accy Mates!

Re: Broadband Help.

I believe the installation rates are so high cause the competition is so small. It's like when DirectV first came out. They wanted $300 - $400 to install and now it's all free.

Although the monthly fees do seem high (VABB - $49/month and HughesNet - $59/month), I will be saving alot by cutting back on the telephone we now have and may be/should be able to get rid of AOL right?

I would imagine both these companies carry all the same features? Yes, I've looked at the comparisons and have very little idea what the Kbps is for this but not for this unless you're doing this while doing that . .

This broadband, even though it's was the "slowest level" price I took, has been so very enjoyable.

I was telling the guys over in the Global Trivia thread that it has knocked my times in half. While I finished about 130th in the world during the last trivia, I've been able to hang at ~50th. This is mainly due to the time it no longer takes to load each quiz.

Thanks again gang!
