Re: dial up

yeah..moving home and was with ntl cable so cancelled but the move has been delayed.. a word of warning.. the cable broadband I had was ok but it will not accept any other isp's than telewest or ntl.. and to make things worse I signed up for 1 months dial up access on fast24 to fill the gap but found they only do BT lines

Thats because the cable and equipment belongs to NTL/Telewest, they are the same firm now. When you have cable installed you are tied to that cable operator.

Fast24 is an ADSL service so it can only work on a BT phone line. I can't believe they did not check that you could receive the service before selling it you. If you go to most ADSL isp's web pages they are an availability checker for your phone number. Your cable phone number should say you can't get ADSL broadband services.

By the way how did you find your cable, I keep saying I am going to change over but have not got round to it. Partly because my Pipex ADSL has been so reliable for the last 5 or 6 years.

Re: dial up

patience my young grasshopper.....

I occasionally have to use dial up at work for some stuff and yes it painfully slow compared to what we have become used to. Just be grateful you didn't start off down in the <10kbps connections that some of us did.

The actual cable broadband has been fine..but not cheap compared to ADSL isp's and like has been said you don't have the option to change to another provider.

It could be worse - it could have a huge picture of Richard Branson on it.

Re: dial up

You guys are fortunate that broadband is so readily available. It sounds like it's pretty inexpensive too? We live off the main roads so don't have access to broadband/cable connections. I believe I could sign up through our DirectV satilite but not quite sure how it all works. The kids and Cindy have been pressing very hard for me to get it somehow, someway.

Re: dial up

It's 56K Ian (I think that's what you're asking). When I connect to the internet there seems to be a range of 26,000 bps? - 44,000 bps? I really don't understand what ever it all means.
