Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

Seems to work better on version 7-10 than it did on 7-4
Couldn't get it to run at bootup on ver 04 but does on ver10
Another thing is, if I opened Firefox without starting Compiz I had no orange bar at the top of the browser, couldn't move or resize the page, had to close it by using file-quit.
Do you have a firewall installed Entwisi? I tried Firestarter and couldn't get that to run from bootup either, haven't tried it on ver 10 yet

Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

firewall, not on my laptop, there are no 'trojans that can phone home, my router protects all incoming services and I don't run any services by default (telnet/ssh/web/etc) so I have no ports listening for anything to get a hold on.

The isue with the orange bar was usually down to a conflict in libdecorator, if you reinstalled taht library it fixed it. I'm still on 7.04 as I haven't bothered to upgrade yet ( not really anything new and shiny that I need and my kernel etc is up to date)

You need to add programs to the right runlevel to get them to start on startup, thats all

The firewall would start up then it would lock up if you pressed any buttons

Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

Heres another for ya Entwisi
I have a program I use on windows (lottery manager for works lottery) and have now got it to run under wine, I can select "email members" under windows and it automatically opens Outlook and the email is there ready for sending, I use Mozilla for email on Ubuntu, I press the email button, screen flashes but it won't open my email application, can't find any options as to where to set it in the program either - can it be done??

Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

simply, nope, at the end of the day you are asking a program running effectively 'inside' another to know what email settings etc that you have. Under Windows it is using teh default email client association to open Outlook.

Wine has no understanding of application associations so it doesn't know that you want it to open Mozilla. at best I guess it tries to open Outlook under linux which is clearly not going to happen.

one thing I try to instill in new linux users is to try to stop thinking "I use XXXX program under Windows" and to try to think "I want to do YYYYY, what will do it under Linux" at teh end of teh day you want software to do something for you it doesn't matter what its called.

Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

Cheers, there is another option, I can save to file rather than email so will do that then email the file out as an attachment.
I was willing to change programs but can't find a syndicate manager for Linux
Lot of "Wheeling" programs about but I couldn't find what I wanted.
I have changed to a few new programs and have been learning them for a while, the main one thats doing my head in is Gimp, takes me ages to do something I could do in seconds in Photoshop but I'm getting there - even though it is slowly

Re: Hah, I see your Vista Aero and raise you Compiz!!!

I find GIMP far more useable than photoshop, what specifically are you struggling with?

As for lottery stuff, I'll see what I can dig out as I've never really looked

Not really struggling, whatever tool I want it takes me a while to find it, could select them blindfolded in photoshop
