3G is a faster data connecion for those of us that use our phones for Internet work and also aids video calling(thsi will work in 2G but quite jumpy). The 3G network covers most of the UK but not as much as the older 2G(And 2.5G but We can ignore this for all intents and purposes). So in good signal area your phone will be in 3G mode. If the 3G signal is lost it will drop back to 2G.
For complete un techies think dial up internet was like the orginal GPRS speed, 2G brought about something like the 512K broadband, 3G is the like the 8M that we all get now and there is a new technology on the horizon that can offer a faster connection like Bulldog etc do
Now teh mobile ones are all a stage slower than 'home' broadband but the orders of magnitude are of a similar number.

Typical, that's why I do plumbing and not computers, I knew it kept showing 3G on my phone, and jumped the gun!! Cheers Ian.
