Piggy backing

2 people are cautioned by police for using someone elses wireless internet connection aka piggy backing.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/200704...s-fa6b408.html

Least something is done about it if caught, but has quite worrying consequences but how can u be sure that your internet wireless network is safe ??? Even with WEP/WPA, once routewr default has been set up it can be hard to change it like router name & dont really understand the WPA configuration whereas WEP is easier but how safe is it?

Re: Piggy backing

WEP is totally insecure, it can be broken in less than an hour.

WPA is a lot better, basic security is

change your Essid(Network name) to something hard to guess using different characters, e.g. I might want to use Entwisi so I would do 3n!wi51

Then I would disable teh broadcast of this.

I would enable WPA witha suitable key

And I woudl lock my router to known MAC addresses only.

Beyond this if they really want info off your network they will kick your door in and take the PC.

Remember that even with no encyrption etc on all HTTPS websites are still secure as the SSL layer is still out the realm of hackers ability.

Re: Piggy backing

Ok techies hehehehehehhe

But to the average home user its not quite so simple is it i've tried to change my SSID & it wont let me change the default name.....& what is the WAP security Question bit is that make your own up or what

................seee not as simple but if im having difficulties with it gawd help anyone else, altho u cant just hack a WEP tho unless u is a crooked geezer [ess], i cant just go onto tinks' network without WEP info.

Re: Piggy backing

RTFM chuck!

as for wep, the tools are readily available to crack WEP, a half decent laptop will do it.

Re: Piggy backing

I have BT home Hub.

To see if anyone else is connected I use Hub Manager, it will say who is connected, anything dodgy on there and it would be time to ring BT.

I have looked into setting up security on it but havent been bothered as yet. as anyone who connected would have to be pretty close anyways.

I have to use WEP for the boys Nintendo DS's, they don't support WPA. I have locked the router down to just their mac's though so I think I am safe.
