Speed up your browsing?

Whenever you visit a website such as Accrington Web - Discussion forum for the Hyndburn and Accrington area. your ISPs DNS server has to resolve the 'human' name to one a computer can understand, an IP address which is a set of numbers.

For various reasons your ISPs one can be quite slow. Google reckon they've come up with a refined version which will speed up the process of resolving an address and therefore speed up your browsing experience.

I've given it a go and it seems quite nippy.

Instructions for Windows, Linux and Mac OS are located at Using Google Public DNS

It is quite a simple procedure if you follow the instructions. You only really change two numbers in the settings. Just remember to write the numbers you currently have there down in case you need to revert back to them.

Re: Speed up your browsing?

It's been faster during today, but seemed to slow down at about 8pm. Will keep it going for a few days to see if it's consistent. Perhaps it's something to do with American schoolkids going online?

At the shop, which has BT internet, I get a massive slowdown at 4pm. If it's down to the local kids clogging up the bandwidth, it's particularly galling as I pay for business rates for my internet connection...
