It does a scan and update as soon as the PC is turned on as default, but as willow says you can change this.

every install I've seen (And I've installed it on loads ) does an initial boot sector scan, nothing more before it starts to load Windows then it does a definition update. It certainly doesn't scan the disks at startup

The one I have installed on my PC does a Full System Scan on boot up every day. Every time I turn It on at dinner it will do a scan.

Its a full scan also as it take around 50 Mins +

If It is stopped though and you turn your PC on & off it will not scan again until a long time period has passed (not sure what this is)
