Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
Trying to get it to talk to my mobile phone - failing miserably.
On the plus side, it's installed and got a wireless connection without any problems at all - more than Jaunty managed on my Dell laptop...

Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
Weird, what phone?, I've used it on my lappy with both Symbian S60 ( i.e. most Nokias ) , WinMO and Maemo and just selecting PC suite it auto pops up a wizard asking which network, payment plan etc and then connects just fine.
If you can a few seconds after plugging in teh phone run "dmesg" in a terminal and post teh last 30 or so lines.

Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
@ Entwisi: Thanks for the offer of help. Going to do a completely fresh install as I've been tinkering trying to add all sorts of stuff to get it to work... Watch this space...
@ Restless: I'm using "wubi" - it just works. It's a wrapper for Ubuntu linux. You install it as a windows application and tell it how much disk space to use. When you boot up, you have an option to carry on into Windows or use ubuntu for that session instead.
I'm giving it another shot because I'm having such a bad time with Windows 7. None of my programs work any more, so I'm faced with paying to upgrade them just so they will work, or moving over to free, open source alternatives.

Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
I have a dell inspiron 1720 and all hardware works fine, wifi, bluetooth, 3G, nividia drivers etc
I actually now find it harder to find some device drivers in Windows than Linux ( e.g. get a Dell Axim PocketPC to work in Vista/7. simply wont work at all and Microsift say they will never supply a driver)

Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
cool. Im installing now. I like how it performs the dualboot itself... Since i found the guides for dualbooting 7 and xp a nightmare to even bother attempting
@studio25 I have a modified version of windows 7 on my tower. I haven't had many problems with it, It actually works like a dream, But my laptop is simply not good enough for vista/7 it slows down that bad can barely stand it. So linux is looking like an option, and i like trying something new(and of course its free )

Re: Ubuntu 10 (Linux for the non techies )
There you go - back in now, using a fresh install of Ubuntu 25min after my last post. And that includes an 245 MB update session in update manager. Now on 2.6.32-24 (Wubi installs 2.6.32-21)
Will edit this post with the info you requested, Entwisi...

OK - here it is: When I attach the 'phone, I get a popup message top right saying "Auto ETH1 - Connection established"

(Square brackets changed to curly brackets, just in case it causes a problem)
Incidentally, the phone was connected all the time during install. I unplugged it for a few seconds and plugged it back in, which is probably why there's a USB disconnect in there...

It's an O2 XDA Orbit - which is really just a rebadged HTC Artemis. Unlocked and on virgin.
ICS wasn't enabled, but it is now. I've finally managed to sync, but I don't know how, because I've messed about with too many settings for me to know which was the combination that worked.
Now I have to work out the procedure which I need to follow to get a new synch done - from clean boot to connecting the mobile to being synchronised. As far as I can tell, it's:
{Alt-F2** synce-sync-engine
{Alt-F2** synce-kpm
Connect mobile and wait a bit.
{Alt-F2** multisync0.90
Wait a bit, then run ActiveSync on mobile.
I'll reboot and try it again, then confirm.
