Ubuntu 11...

...seems to be out. Installing it now, over the internet. Just downloaded the minimal install of 19MB and put it on a CD. Used it in a ten-year-old PC connected to the router, and it's downloading only what that particular PC needs* and installing as I type.

*As opposed to the usual technique of putting all files for all conceivable bits of hardware onto an installation CD

Re: Ubuntu 11...

I think the CD drive on this PC might be too old. I was getting an error mounting /dev/loop0 something to do with squashfs

Can't boot from USB either - PC is too old for that too

Re: Ubuntu 11...

Can you boot from USB if you use a floppy disk to boot from USB?

Re: Ubuntu 11...

There's no option to boot from USB in the BIOS, unless that's what "Boot from other devices" means.

There are three options in the boot order, and each of them contains four HDDs (only one fitted, though), FDD, CD, Network, LS120.

Re: Ubuntu 11...

How old is the board? I have a board here MSI ms7181 (socket 754) and that has the option

Yeah boot from other device means that. If you turn that option on the USB stick should then come up in the bootlist.

Re: Ubuntu 11...

Wow - old post!

I've managed to get it to boot from SD card, now - but I have replaced my laptop since my last post...
