Book - History of Bacup Football Club

Plenty of info re games against Stanley in the 1970's

135 years of football in Bacup

The history of Bacup Football Club

A new book has just been published recording the history of Bacup Football Club.

For the past 10 years Roger Hindle has researched the history of his home town’s football club from its early beginnings in 1879 as a works team from Irwell Springs Mill in Weir Village in the through to the present day.

For the first 10 years games were played in and around Weir Village but now Bacup Football Club celebrates 125 years playing football at its current West View ground. This season 2014/15 just happens to coincide with the publication of this book.
Over 160 pages chart the ups and downs of the club with poignant stories and tales including some excellent photos of the teams over the decades. The book is broken down into decade chapters and gives a thorough and detailed account of most seasons.
“What was interesting to find,” said Roger, “is that the club has played 8 current or former Premier League sides, including a famous game against Manchester Utd in 1911. “I guess not many non-league clubs of similar standing to Bacup could better that.”

Bacup is one of the oldest non-league clubs in Lancashire and the north west. This book captures the club’s success’s in winning the Lancashire Junior Cup in 1911, the Lancashire Combination Championship in 1947 and the North West Counties Challenge Cup in 2004 and 2012.
“This book charts an interesting path of social history in the development of the game many of us love. When other valley clubs have folded Bacup have miraculously been able to keep going”.

For Bacup and Rossendale people, past players, supporters or anyone with an interest in Non League Football it’s a good read.

Copies of the book are on sale at £14.95 at Bacup & Rossendale Football Club, Bacup News, Bacup Natural History Museum, Rodney’s Greengrocers, or from Roger Hindle - c/o rhindle @ymail.com.

Re: Book - History of Bacup Football Club

I wish it success. I will email Roger an address which might lead to the National Football Museum buying one. Am sorry that my old pal Victor Collinge of Bacupis no longer around to buy one. His wife Carol runs the Border Book Shop in Tod. I will send her address too.
