Talking Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

Didn’t Vierra leave the field because of injury kerrie_l?

Yes I think that Zidane should forfeit the Golden Ball award. In fact he could go a long way to regaining his reputation by declining to accept the award.

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

Italian Captain Fabio Cannavarro was second place behind Zidane...A magic player that still has it at his age but lost his head in a moment of madness...

zidane's foul must have been the only legitimate reason i have seen for a footballer dropping to the floor this world cup

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

whatever he said it must have been pretty acurate , lets face it not many people have anything good to say about the french and most derogitory comments pretty much cover them

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

yes he was probably abused, insulted and generally peed off but lets be honest, it would happen just as bad in the spanish league and ZZ himself probably gives just as good as he gets. Hes no angel you know, I was told yesterday hes been sent off 14 times in his career which is quite high for a striker.

What I find appaling is that teh French have made him to be a hero, FIFA should fine him any money he earned in that WC plus some, he should be banned from any involvement in football for a significant period of time as well as an example.

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

I do agree with you entwisi but equally I think Mazzerazzi (probably spelt wrong) should also be penalised.

I know Zidane is no angel and shouldn't be praised for his actions or rewarded in any way but the provocation also has to be recognised or things will keep on happening. For instance, I also think Ronaldo should be disciplined for his part in Rooney's sending off - whether it's £10,000 or just a severe telling off with a mark against his record - there should be official recognition of the root of the incidents as well.

Zidane and Rooney both acted like hotheads and reacted badly but that still doesn't excuse the people who wound them up.

I don't agree, if you are playing at that level you should be able to ignore any comments and should be punnished for these type of reaction. Not just by the club but in law.
Do you teach your children to smack someone in the gob if they insult/upset them in the playground? I am sure you don't, you probably tell them to just ignore it. What is the difference?

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

Yes they should have ignored it and yes they should be punished for their actions - I've already said that.

But if a child was shouting racial abuse in the playground at your child, whether or not someone hit them, wouldn't you want the headmaster to deal with it and punish the child?

Exclamation Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

Two wrongs never make a right but it ain’t half satisfying when you react to a wrong even if it is with another wrong.

The real culprit is FIFA and the other football authorities. They only pay lip service to punishing transgressions and also tend to be selective. They holler foul against other teams but are strangely silent on their own.

The referees also need to be stricter with the laws of the game but then they always have the excuse that they didn’t see what goes on and if they cannot see an offence they cannot punish it, which is fair enough. The assistant referee can only watch from one viewpoint so maybe we should have 4 assistant referees to cover all angles. Of course this could cause conflict in off side decisions where one AR flags for off side and his counterpart does not. But problems are there to be solved not ignored and I’m sure that there would be an answer to that particular problem if the will were there.

There is only one way to stamp out the cheating and waving imaginary cards at the referee that goes on and that is to punish the culprit there and then by inviting them to spend a while in a ‘Sin Bin’ even if it means several players. They would soon stop if they lost the services of three players for ten minutes. A yellow card is meaningless in that the eventual punishment does not favour the victim (the current opponents) but some other team in the future.

Any offence that warrants a yellow card should be met with some time off the field of play like in Rugby and Ice Hockey. You don’t see much dissention in either and when on the odd occasion you do there is another candidate for the ‘Sin Bin’. Two ‘Sin Bins’ for one player in a match equals a red card. If a goal is scored against a team with a player or players in the ‘Sin Bin’ it automatically ends their sentence. I would suggest a 10 minutes spell in the ‘Sin Bin’ controlled by the fourth official.

We may well end up with a 7 playing 9 match for a while but it will make managers and players sit up and take notice and think twice before committing a foul worthy of a yellow card.

People will argue that they attend a match to watch 11 players take on 11 but we don’t attend to watch players foul each other. We want to watch a game where the skills of playing football are displayed not shirt or arm pulling or hacking at legs or trying to get a player sent off.

It is time that the various football authorities took real steps to clean up the game.

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

What was said to Zidane... This is a disgrace - FIFA need to actually do something for a change. You can't have players making slurs like that against a fellow pro.
From Soccernet; Since Sunday evening the whole World has been debating what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said to Zinedine Zidane to make the retiring Frenchman react in the way he did.

The French captain, in his last ever professional game, thrust his head into Materezzi's chest in Sunday's World Cup Final resulting in a red card and shame for Zidane. Today, with the help of Italian lip-reader Arturo Belladini, we can reveal what drove Zidane to self destruct; Materazzi was seen to hold Zidane's shirt on the edge of the penalty box in extra-time at which point Zidane said "if you want my shirt so bad you can have it" Materazzi responded "I dont want your shirt you m***** f*****. you're a f****** old man"

As they jog away Zidane is seen to laugh at this and it is unclear how he responded due to him having his back to the TV camera Materazzi then hit a volley of abuse "you should've quit 2 years ago, you're a f****** has-been" "m***** f*****! your mum is a f****** muslim terrorist and you are too, f*** you old man, f*** you old man, this arena is not for you anymore m***** f*****" Zidane carries on jogging away when... Materazzi finally says.... "you are only good enough for Blackburn Rovers now" It's at this very point Zidane turned and head-butted him.

Ha ha, good one BazF, agree that the final insult for any player would to be told he's only good enough for Blackburn Rovers! I quite understand Zidane's reaction now

Re: Can you believe what Zidane did?

I often wonder how some men would react at work, if someone called their mother 'an old whore' and their sister a c*********g slag, or similar. I'm sure that many of us would find it difficult to walk away from such an insult to people we love and hold in such high regard. Of course, violence isn't the answer but it is very tempting to resort to it at certain times. On the field, it's all part of the gamesmanship and the perpetrators know exactly what they are doing. Ronaldo was winding up Rooney before the game even started, we all saw it, and also the infamous 'wink' when his mission was accomplished. He knew Rooney's temperemental weakness and exploited it. The same scenario applies to Zidane. Until football cleans up its act and stops the verbal baiting there will always be those who rise to it. The verbage itself should be a sending off offence and maybe when that has happened a few times it will help to cut down on the violent retaliations. The whole thing is just another sad indication of the lack of true sportsmanship, along with the diving and theatrics, much of which was introduced to the game by the Italians in the first place. I probably saw over 20 of the world cup games, and not one of them was played in the true spirit of football. I suppose we must blame commercialism again, and yet, the sport could learn a great deal from watching how professional golfers and their spectators (generally) conduct themselves, along with Rubgy players and the poeple who watch it.

Just as a footnote, and I'm not codoning what Zidane did, but if Zidane had really wanted to hurt the Italian git, he would have aimed the blow at his nose and not his chest.
