Can't defend it!!!!!!!
Liverpool will NOT qualify for Europe’s elite club competition next season by beating AC Milan in this month’s final.
Kop supporters and former players are fuming that last year the FA said on their OWN website Arsenal or Chelsea would automatically be included the following season if they won the trophy.
Yet this week Soho Square officials decided that the team which finishes fourth in the Premiership will be granted the final Champions League slot.
Former Liverpool striker David Fairclough said: "I don’t know who made the decision last year but it appears symptomatic of what’s been going on at the FA over the last couple of years.
"It seems strange that last year it involved two southern clubs and this year it is two clubs from the north.
"There is no doubt that there is still a north-south divide when the FA are dealing with things.
"It is a mish-mash. It is not clear what has changed in the last 12 months to make the FA come to a different conclusion this time."
Seems nothing changes, semis at Cardiff for the southern surpporters, Wembley being picked for the national stadium now this. But I bet it will bring out all the Na Na's from Scum and Arse followers.

it does seem a rather strange decision, but theres always been preferential treatment for(london) southern clubs, after all we are barbarians,2nd class citizens, etc up north.

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
no that has been the rule since the start of the season that you have to get the position in the league to qualify for the champions league you havent made the grade in the league so yo dont get back in
stop moaning about it u have been crap in the league and dont deserve to get in the cup on your proformance in the league.
Which is the way the entry for the champions league is decieded over a season long performance once again a reflection that the table does not lie!!!

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
The FA are refusing to make any comment after apparently being shown to be hypocrites in the row over Champions League eligibility.
Just hours after the English game's ruling body stated that Everton would qualify for next season's Champions League ahead of Liverpool even if Rafa Benitez's team win the competition in this month's final, it was demonstrated that their ruling was a complete reversal from the guidelines they issued when Chelsea and Arsenal were faced with a similar predicament a year ago.
With the two London clubs meeting in the quarter-final of last season's Champions League, the FA published a ruling that indicated that either club would automatically qualify for the following year's competition even if they finished outside of the top four in the Premiership.
The article, published on March 10, 2004, stated: "Should Arsenal or Chelsea win the Champions League, they will automatically qualify for next season's competition, but England will not gain an extra Champions League place, even if they finish outside of the top four in the Premiership. In that scenario, the fourth-placed team in the Premiership will play in next season's Uefa Cup."
The statement has since been removed from the FA website, with the Soho Square bods refusing to make any public comment.
The reason England has 4 places is because of its history and success in europe, which team has had the most success, erm... Scum? No, Arse? ha ha ha, Chelsea? do be brief, maybe Everton? no its the team that is being rejected by so many so called football fans.

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
i do not reject liverpool and the great history they have in europe hopefully to be added to in istanbul. But to say that you are deserve the place more than chelsea or Arsenal, Man United or Everton is wrong!!!
If we are talking who has had the most history should get in the competetion is like saying stanley should be in the premiership as they where a founder of the english football league!!!
So come on stop whinging about it, win the champions league and i bet that liverpool will be let into it next year!!! If not then i will be the first one to complain about it!!! as if it was a foriegn team such as Milan, Inter or Madrid they would be allowes into it again.

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
Actualy I am talking about double standards
With the two London clubs meeting in the quarter-final of last season's Champions League, the FA published a ruling that indicated that either club would automatically qualify for the following year's competition even if they finished outside of the top four in the Premiership.

In that scenario, the fourth-placed team in the Premiership will play in next season's Uefa Cup."
I only added the history lesson for people with short memories and who wear Scum scarves.

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
Looks like the money men could be taking over on this one, it seems that the sponsors and TV companies are insisting that should Liverpool win then they will be entered for next years Champions League, of course UEFA don't want to lose face and admit this yet in case Liverpool lose but money talks and Liverpool will be ok should they beat AC Milan.

Re: Can't defend it!!!!!!!
Although I have to agree that it is unfortunate that this happened when two Northern clubs were involved I have to agree with the ruling itself. I have never understood why in international competition the holders of the title are given automatic entrance to the next competition. After all, we in England have been running the FA cup longer than any other football knockout competition in the world and the previous year's winners have to qualify, like everyone else, if they wish to retain it. Why should the European cups be any different? So I think the new rule is better. However, it is a pity that things have worked out the way they have for Liverpool, but the powers that be had to pick a year to make the change and this happened to be it.

Lets get this straight Liverpool are only asking for the chance to defend the trophy should they win, they are not asking to get a bye to next years final or even the group stages, just a chance to defend it. Personally the rule was there at the start of the season for the top 4 to quailfy and that should stand but there is a case in favour of the reds which certain fans for some reason are unable to accept, like the child who took karma off me, grow up.

An FA with no balls and looking to make a quick buck, why wouldn't it happen in Germany or Italy or Spain because there FA actualy stand up and get counted when it matters, what happens at ashton gate......... they just sleep with each other and then wonder why no one takes them seriously. Isnt it typical of the approch if we don't do anything we can't be guilty.

I do see your point and I consider that it is a valid one, however, it is not the way it is going to be and YOU need to accept the fact. I also had two points taken from me the other day. That is only the third time I have lost Karma. Two of those occassions were because I had dared to be on the negative side of a discussion about Liverpool F.C. I have still never deducted Karma from anyone, just in case you were wondering if it was I who reduced yours Bagpuss.
