Great Britain Football team for 2012

BBC SPORT | Football | Home nations dispute GB 2012 team

The scots, irish and welsh say no the english say yes.

Why not have a Great Britain team for the olympics? Could you imagine it picking the best players from each country to play. Who says it would be the big name players like Rooney, Walcott etc. It would give some of the others a chance to shine. Plus in 5 years time who says they will be still at the top of their game could be someone else.

The scots, irish and welsh are saying no because they think FIFA would say when it came to the world cup that you can play under the Great Britain team no Scotland, Northern Ireland and Welsh teams. But seeing as they have already recognised them as countries with their own football teams for god knows how many years then they cant go back on this can they.

Not many of the big names from England would play anyway with all the namby pamby Premiership players going on about playing too many games.... blah blah blah.

I suppose it would give good opportunities to all the 'B' team standard internationals though.

Cool Re: Great Britain Football team for 2012

FIFA and EUFA have been agitating for a GB football team for donkey’s years but we have always resisted. Having a GB football team for the Olympics is opening the door to more pressure.

So I am against a GB football team.

We are four countries united in a kingdom and the way things are going Scotland could well be the first to break away.

I believe most players in an Olypic football team can onlybe up to a certain age (23 I think) but you are allowed a few exceptions (3 I think), so it would not be as some think, the senior England side plus 2 or 3 token players from the other nations.

However I am against it. I cannot see myself cheering for a Welsh/N.Irish/Scotttish player to score and thinking he is doing it for my country. England all the way.
