Craig Short has confirmed he will leave Blackburn Rovers at the end of the season and may retire from football.
The ageing defender has been at Ewood Park since the summer of 1999 but is calling time on his spell with Rovers.
He concedes he can no longer cope with the stringent demands of training with a Premiership club and is considering his future in the game.
Short has just returned to fitness after six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury and he admits that, during his spell of inactivity, he contemplated quitting.
The 36-year-old is now prepared to carry on until the campaign's conclusion before deciding on his future.
The centre half is already committed to leaving Blackburn but is still uncertain about whether to drop down to a lower division.
"I think I'm probably going to pack in," said Short.
"When I first got injured over Christmas I said to myself 'right, that's it, I'm finishing now'.
"Now I've got more of an open mind and if I carry on until the end of the season and feel good then I'll see what happens in June, depending on whether any offers come my way.
"This is the first season where I've found it hard, physically.
"Training has been a lot harder under Sparky [Rovers boss Mark Hughes] and I've found that difficult, so I don't want to join a club where I can't do what I used to do.
