40 years
Wynonie's "Summer of Love" thread got me thinking & thought I'd research my little musing.
I found that next Friday will be the 40th anniversary of the UK release of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'.
Now, let me state that it isn't my favourite Beatles work by a long way, and from this point on they lost the plot for me, but it's influence is undeniable.
The great Jimi Hendrix, on hearing the record for the first time, went out & played the title track with his band at the next gig he played. Joe Cocker did a great rendition of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' in '68, the second(ish) track from the album.
What are your thoughts on the album & it's influence over the past four decades?

Re: 40 years
It was forty years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile.

Re: 40 years
Personally, I never cared for Sergeant Pepper; I thought it was pretentious, contrived and self-indulgent. I also think that it had a hugely damaging effect on popular music by encouraging other musicians to go in this direction, leading to some of the most pompous, over-blown drivel ever committed to vinyl. It would have been much better if the Beatles had bucked the trend in '67 by going back to basics and becoming the tight little rock 'n' roll band they were in 1961. They would have produced better music and possibly pushed the music scene in general in a much more exciting direction, well away from the clutches of the dreaded progressive rock menace,
However, I accept that my views are very much in the minority!

Re: 40 years
It's thirty years ago this week that the Sex Pistols released 'Anarchy in the UK'...just in time to take the number one spot for the Queen's Silver Jubilee week.

Re: 40 years
Sgt. Peppers, although it was still influential when I was growing up, and some of my friends raved about it, I never really got.
