All the sixes.
Although not an exact science, it's been noted before that for the last sixty years something exciting happens in the wonderful world of music, or a new scene starts or reaches it's peak, when we get to the part of a decade with a six at the end of the year.
56- Rock 'n' Roll.
66- Trippy Hippies.
76- Punk.
86- House.
96- Brit Pop.
Are we to expect the birt of something new this year?

Re: All the sixes.
Unfortunately it's the whole emo scene that seems to be taking over
You know; all the blokes dressing like birds claiming they're all bisexual listening to some heroin addict wearing too much lippy moaning about graves and stuff because it's like, way cool man.....hmm.
Basically all The Cure wannabes - not having a pop at Cure by the way they were great...but you know how it is when you get the wannabe bands...cringeworthy or what!
However with the massive explosion with the Arctic Monkeys we may (hopefully) see the indie scene creeping over into the top 40 a lot more; bands like The Strokes, The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs have shown what massive appeal they already have over the summer festivals and acheiving top 10 singles/albums.
Also there are a lot of the big name bands bringing out new material over the summer, for example Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis bringing out an EP of b-sides, Kasabian's new album (can't wait for that).
So hopefully in the near future we will rediscover pop music; get rid of the armani wearing 19 year old models and bring back the bands that have talent and can play instruments! I mean look at Duran Duran - a few blokes that could play their instruments and could write half decent pop tunes...don't like them at all like but compared to Westlife with their vomit worthy albums, Duran Duran made the best music to ever cross the airwaves!

Re: All the sixes.
That's what I think too, about the re-emergence of indy type bands who play guitars, they are a breath of fresh air after all the manufactured pap pop.
The Kaiser Chiefs and The Strokes evoke the same sort of excitment as when I first heard the Jam or Siouxie. But like my beloved Goldfrapp, aren't they a little bit retro, and will it evolve into a definite music scene as it seems to have done at this point in decades past?

I see what you mean about new bands being all 'retro' and I think there is always a way to revive an old music genre - just ask Noel Gallagher. 1994's anthem 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' grungified the T-Rex riff from 'Get It On' and managed to kickstart the whole 'Britpop' era.
I think we just need a definitive tune - or have we already had it and missed the boat ride completely? I Predict A Riot, anyone?
