Personally i admire the likes of 'the edge' from u2 class guitar rifts & distinct to u2 sound i could listen to him solo, as is Brian May again another class distinct guitarist
But then for variation of guitar play would be George Harrison turning his hand from guitar to the Sitar which brought the beatles the experimentation of sound in the late 60's.
Yes Prince Is Good,
Better than a lot of people may think,he would be in my top ten
I like John Butler from the John Butler Trio, Have a listen to Betterman.
Also Tommy Emanuel. Is a Great guitarist.
He is also responsible for me spending 2 of the most boring hours of my life at wembley arena.
Mind you this was when he just changed his name to symbol and refused to play any old stuff. It was **@!£$ tedious though.
Just thought of an awesome guitarist who very rarely gets a mention and that is Bob Mould. (Just listen to Land Speed Record or Warehouse Songs and Stories by Husker Du).
gotta be angus young ,gary moore ,michael schenker, paul stanley, keith richard in hi hey day brian jones ,most underrated gotta be hughey of fun livin criminals u gotta see them live ....
i wont say "best" guitarist.... really good guitarists known for **YAWN** solos **/YAWN** bore the hell out of me. I tend to lean towards the singer songwriter types...
Johnny marr ( by far not the best, but god damn good! ) him being mentioned isnt a suprise, though anything other than the smiths of his i find quite boring...
mark kozelek/mark eitzel are my favourite guitarists, but not the best by all means.
others
ry cooder, jeffrey lee pierce, bert janch, david rawlings( This guy rocks! ), kid congo powers, jeff buckley

Try 'Boomslang' by Johnny Marr & The Healers, little known great album.
Much much better than his work with Electronic.
