Re: Greatest British Musician?

What no Joe Strummer. A scandal. This man influenced every one on the list that followed and the whole band explosion thing right now points back to the Clash... Forget Profumo, this is BIGGER!!

I am a big fan of The Clash and Joe Strummer and believe he was one of the few people who knew the true essence of punk.(RIP Joe )
However I fail to see how he could have influenced anyone on the list apart from maybe Noel Gallagher - as they all started their careers way before Joe Strummer's time.

Pete Townsend was influenced by the Clash and the Clash's friendship with the WHO is legendary. Rodger Daltry sang on Joes last album.

Brian May helped support Joe's wife with the Gorillas appeal gig and was a friend and admirer of Joe.

And last week Bob Dylan who likes the Clash [and its his sons favourite band] opened up his encores with London Calling! He is a friend of Mick Jones [Clash] and at some point Mick may go in to the studio with Dylan to do some recording.

Daltry, Townsend, May [and thats just the ones you put up!] plus Dylan.

If there was any justice Joe would be on that list.

Re: Greatest British Musician?

so they were friends and liked each others songs? so what!
theres a difference between admiration and inspiration you know.
aside from that, who would you take out of the poll to fit Joe in? the polls on here only allow 10 maximum options.

Re: Greatest British Musician?

I'd have included Lemmy from Motorhead in that list. He's been playing in well known bands since the early 60s, he's probably influenced almost everyone who's into very heavy metal and he still spends most of his time on the road touring.
From the list though, I'd agree with you. Keith Moon was just incredable to watch.

Re: Greatest British Musician?

A drummer. I've seen him play at a few Whitesnake gigs. Truely awesome.

Re: Greatest British Musician?

Ok, thanks for that, I would never have known him otherwise.

As for drummer's Roger Taylor from Queen tops my list! For drummer's at least.

Re: Greatest British Musician?

The only problem with polls like this is that they tend to concentrate on the main stream (which is of course unavoidable), however there are many great bands and atrists knocking about.

My all time fav and much underated band would have to be Marillion!

Fantastic live act. Saw them at the Aylesbury Civic 2 weeks ago... Excellent!

Re: Greatest British Musician?

I really must mention Alan Leach formerly of Shed Seven, ironically another drummer - never realised I had a thing about drummers previously!

Re: Greatest British Musician?

Too true, Rick Allen. He was good before, but how good must he be now. How many tragedies can one band go through?
