Re: I want to learn guitar
Well as for tuning it take a look at this site. One of many I think that can be found. For the rest its practise.

Re: I want to learn guitar
I've never had a guitar lesson in my life & I'm playing 2 gigs in the next 2 months.
I just started off with the good old tuition video to learn how to tune the thing & replace strings etc, then started learning Beatles & Oasis chords/tabs from the internet and went from there, tabs help you a lot to get the chord shapes right. They look a bit mental when you first look but it gets easier.
Good luck and have patience
ps http://www.ultimate-guitar.com is great for looking up songs.

Re: I want to learn guitar
I can play 4 different instruments (piano - grade 4, Flute - grade 6, drums & steel pans) so can read music very well. Reading music is just like learning a script for a play. But knowing how to read music really isnt everything when playing guitar. Its all chords etc... Ive always wanted to play it but could never get the hang of it, my brother has tried many, many times to teach me to no avail. so I dont think its got anything to do with being musical, although a sense of music and rhythm obviously help.

Re: I want to learn guitar
So, are you going for chords now to accompany tunes/singing, rather than playing the melodies themselves? Learning to read music for guitar really isn't hard at all. It's a lot easier than reading piano music. If you can spread your fingers wide and hold down the strings on the frets playing is really easy.
But no Tinks they don't come ready tuned from the shop. The strings slacken all the time and constantly need retuning. And of course every time you replace a broken string it needs tuning. You can get an electronic thingummy to tune it to if you don't have a natural ear.
The chords and tabs that Shakermaker is talking about are entirely different to playing the recognisable tunes. They are used for accompanyment and that's easier than playing the melodies but if you get really good you can do both at the same time.

Get what`s scientifically known as an electronic thingummy anyway, it`ll help get your ear in.
Tabs can show you how to play anything from a chord shape to a lead run, it`s just a more pictorial description of the guitar neack with the lines being the strings and the numbers the frets (the metal lines across the neck) Some people with no previous in Clef scores find it easier to understand.
If you want ( I mean Reeeeeeeeeeeaaallyy Want) to play guitar, and you`re prepared to work at it even when you`re crap for a bit and you still keep at it, then you will play guitar. If you want to be Very good then practise scales for 1 hour a day.
I`ve never had lessons and I`ve been a guitarist playing gigs for 30 years this year, I still havent reached that "recognisable tune" thing what you`re talking about, but that`s why you introduce them.
Music Box will have a decent acoustic, you could buy a catalogue guitar cheaper but they can be naff. You could get lessons there but I`d be cheaper. www.thomann.de have a range of Harley Benton acoustics for <£100 you`ll prob get a tuner cheap there. If you see something you like and want it checking over PM me it`s no prob.

Re: I want to learn guitar
See how complicated it's becoming already?
I learned to play classical on a nylon strung Spanish guitar. That meant I could play melodies and/or chord accompaniments. I can read music, which is easy especially for guitar and gives you the advantage of being able to play something without first having to find someone else who can. So I could play classic, folk, country, pop, rock ..... but my 'witchy fingers' put paid to it in the end. It's an inherited thing, my little fingers bend inwards and it's hard to reach the frets so I gave up and concentrated on growing my nails

Re: I want to learn guitar
Yes willow everytime I come back to this thread it's sounding more and more complicated! Maybe I should stick to Gayles suggestion.
I didn't think there was going to be so much stuff involved. I thought I just went to a shop picked up a guitar and one of those things you plug it into to make it sound really loud to annoy the neighbours ...... and start strumming
Not only that I also play left handed, does it make any difference?
